The social network of the BASE participants was assessed with a modified version of the Social Networks in Adult Life Questionnaire (Kahn & Antonucci, 1980). BASE participants classified the individuals in their network according to the degree of emotional closeness, thus, the only persons named in this procedure were those to whom the participant felt close. A circle diagram with three circles concentrically ordered around the word "Me" (Kahn, & Antonucci, 1980) was used to do this. The following data were compiled for each individual mentioned: type of role relationship (e.g., partner, son, neighbour, etc.), duration of the relationship, person's of contacts, and changes in the quality of the relationship over the last five years.
Only at measurement Time 1 they then were asked to give the same details about persons whom they feel very close to despite he or she already had died. These persons were placed in a fictitious fourth circle.
Also only in Time 1, network partners who were mentioned but not placed in any circle were noted in a fictitious ninth circle.
At Time 6 participants were only asked about persons in the first circle.
On this page you will find the following informations concerning the network structure:
Size and type of relationship of the overall network and of each of the four circles.

Literature: Smith & Baltes, 1996, 1999; Wagner, Schütze, & Lang, 1996, 1999; Schütze & Lang, 1993.
